Supporting Neglected & Disadvantaged Children in Romania

school 2Over a year ago we started to work with very deprived children from poor and isolated communities. I am pleased to report that these children are making wonderful progress.

Before Open Hands involvement only very few children went to school – some did not have the necessary shoes or clothes. Others did not see any value in education – their parents cannot read or write, neither could their great grandparents. Hence many children and their families were stuck in a circle of generational poverty.

We really believe that we can break the poverty circle by educating children and their parents and by helping them to understand why school is so important. Over the past few months we have had some wonderful achievements:

We successfully enrolled all the children into schools and kindergartens. Our children attend regularly and as a result we are seeing an increase in their school performance – the children are also receiving better marks.

school3Our staff achieve these positive changes by regularly keeping in touch with teachers and schools. We supply children with books and all other school utensils, as well as shoes and warm clothing which enables them to walk to school. We also help children at home: we visit them 1-2 each week, we keep them healthy and we help them to do their homework and encourage additional learning.
