Supporting Neglected & Disadvantaged Children in Romania

After two years of Rainbow House the greatest novelty for the children still seems to be to sit around the table and eat together. It is beautiful to watch how well the children communicate with each other and how much they enjoy eating and being looked after.

The garden and especially the playground is a favourite. The playground got sponsored last summer and has proven to be a great success with the children. There are constant queues for the two swings. Watching the children play you can see how free and safe they feel here.

But rather than speaking generically about the children at the Rainbow House I would like to tell you what a difference the project has made to just one of our 25 children.

This is Florin*. He is 9 years old and has special needs. Florin’s parents also have learning disabilities and there is a profound lack of love and nurture at home. From a very early age, Florin was accustomed to hunger and abuse. He grew up without stimulation, toys, nourishment or care.

When Florin first came to the Rainbow House 2 years ago he needed consistent one to one input because he was so traumatised and broken. He did not know how to play and would often hit the other children. This was the kind of communication Florin had been taught at home. He was not used to normal childhood joys like playing and exploring.

We make sure that Florin comes to the Rainbow House every day. After 2 years the changes in him are visible. He speaks and engages with the other children nicely. He plays, runs about and laughs infectiously. His appearance has brightened and most of all he has found a profound trust in the Open Hands staff. Watching him play and eat it seems that at the Rainbow House Florin is in heaven.

We are currently working on a child sponsorship program to cover the running costs of the Rainbow House. A place for a child, like Florin, costs Open Hands £70 a month.

We are also working with two of Florin’s older siblings at the Rainbow House. Gabriella*, Florin’s older sister has just found a sponsor which is fantastic news. Our work does not stop at the Rainbow House. We work within Florin’s family to integrate change in Florin’s home life too.

If you are interested in becoming a Rainbow House Sponsor and would like more information of our Child Sponsorship Program then please get in touch with me via email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Thank you for your interest in our work and for helping us to change these children's lives!

Love & peace, Rebekka
