Supporting Neglected & Disadvantaged Children in Romania

Romania was a country that didn’t really enter our thoughts. Sure, many know the harshness of the Communist regime under Nicolae CeauČ™escu and the disturbing pictures of Romanian orphanages in the early 1990’s, but twenty years on we assumed Romania would be a transformed country, an EU member state, and although far from being a wealthy country at least on the right track.

Slowly though, the truth came out. Friends who visited Romania on charity trips or as volunteer nurses came back with shocking tales of neglect and mistreatment of children and Roma people. Occasional news pieces, particularly by the journalist Chris Rogers, were heart breaking showing children suffering and orphanages in awful conditions.

So, in 2008 a few of us took a trailer full of collected donations and drove off to Romania to see first-hand the situation. We worked together with a small charity which works with abandoned children and the Roma community. It was an eye-opening experience to see the daily reality for the poorest of the poor. It was surprising for us to see how little food, clothing, shelter and love those children received.

This spontaneous first trip quickly led to the formation of Open Hands, which became an official charity in 2010. We found it impossible to ignore the suffering we had seen and became determined to support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children in Romania.

These days we work relentlessly to improve the lives of vulnerable and forgotten children in Romania. In 2015 Open Hands registered as an NGO in Romania which enabled us to form official partnerships with local authorities. Our projects, which you can read about here, have transformed the lives of vulnerable families and children. Despite seeing despair and abuse, often hidden from the outside world, Open Hands is committed to bring a light into the darkness and secure a better future for those who have been forgotten, ignored, or abused.
